The Life is Open:
How Digital Archiving is Revolutionizing Joseon Yangban's Life History
A New Horizon of the History of Everyday Life: the Fusion between the Research of the History of Everyday Life and the Digital Humanities Methodology
We intend to establish a digital archive by analyzing the diary written by Jiam Yun Ihu.
We intend to propose a new model of historical analysis through digital technology.
We intend to extend the possibility of the semantic interpretation through the digitalization of the diary materials; which would enable us to read the contents with a multilateral approach, to synthesize the readings in a new way, and to read the hidden contexts of and the relationships among the described elements such as the events, persons, items, and places.
Jiam Ilgi is a record of Yun Ihu's daily life for 8 years from January 1, 1692, till September 9, 1699. It consists of three volumes (920 pages with 13 lines of 23 characters in total). The diary was written in a (semi-) cursive style.
Contents: The diary contains detailed descriptions of Jiam's family/household matters and records of his meetings with the people in Honam region such as the Buddhist monk from Bulgapsa Temple, the governor of Gobu, etc. The customs and living conditions of the Haenam region, along with the funeral/ancestral rites, the trend of tax and price, and the people's responses to the news of the Royal Court are also recorded in the diary.
Additionally, some poetries and travel essays on the local relics are also included in Jiam's Diary. The diary is a valuable historical material from which we can learn not only the life of a yangban clan but also the overall social situations of Honam region of the time. Besides, we can find the records related to the development of Haeeonjeon (tideland reclamation, 海堰田) by Haenam Yun clan in the 17th century, with detailed descriptions of the development process and the labor force mobilized for the project (cited from Honam Cultural Heritage).

- - ja (given name, 字): Jaegyeong (載卿)
- - ho (penname, 號): Jiam (支庵)
- - family origin: Haenam (海南)
Yun Ihu (尹爾厚, 1636~1699) has Jaegyeong as his given name after coming-of-age and Jiam as his penname. He was bron in Haenam as the second son of Yun Euimi (尹義美). His grandfather was Yun Seondo (尹善道).
Jiam became a saengwon (classics licentiate, 生員) in 1679. After he passed jeunggwangsi (augmented examination, 增廣試), he filled various government posts including seungmunwon (officer of diplomatic correspondence, 承文院), seonggyungwan jeonjeok (librarian of the national academy, 成均館典籍), byeongjo jwarang (Assistant Section Chief of the Military Affairs, 兵曺佐郞), jeongrang (rank 5a official, 正郞), seonhyecheongrang (official in the "tribute bureau," 宣惠廳郞), and saganwon jeongwon (censor-general, 司諫院正言). After he served as Hampyeong hyeongam (Magistrate of Hampyeong, 咸平縣監) for a year, he went back to his hometown. Although he was appointed as byeongjorang (official of the Military Affairs) the next year, he did not take it. Since he was falsely accused, he lost his ambition for public office and spent his later years in a simple house in Jukdo (竹島), Haenam. It was when he wrote Jukdosicheop (album of poems, 竹島詩帖).
He did not leave a collection of his works except for the diary he recorded for eight years. Some of his literary works are found in the diary.
